IRDAI cracks down on misselling of tour insurance thru online price ticket booking portals

To minimize mis-selling of travel insurance thru online ticket booking portals and apps, IRDAI has directed insurers to ensure that the journey insurance option isn’t always pre-decided on as a default option on any ticket booking portal on the time of buying tickets online and additionally that tour insurance cannot be bought at the side of tickets sold ninety days before date of travel. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) circular dated 27.09.2019 states: “Insurers shall ensure that any portal or App presenting the tour insurance coverage shall no longer pre-select the option of purchasing the tour cowl as a default choice. The circular shall come into force with immediate effect. All the group coverage arrangements that are not in compliance with these norms shall be terminated with impact from October 1, 2019.”
